Home Water Softeners
Home water softeners are increasingly popular devices that help
to reverse “hard water” in the home. Water is considered
to be “hard” when it has a plethora of calcium and
magnesium particles in it. These particular elements can
lead to unhealthy build-up in home piping systems and can lead
to the formation of soap scum in the bathroom and around sinks.
In order to eliminate hard water, home water softeners are units
that will help to remove calcium and/or magnesium from the water
system. Home water softeners are often the most economical solutions
to overcoming hard water problems in the home.
Here’s how home water softeners work:
When water in a home has too much calcium and/magnesium, the water
can be filtered with sodium ions. Sodium is an element that will
not cause build-up in the piping system and that will not interact
with the chemicals in soap to cause soap scum.
In order to replace calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions,
the home water softeners will run the water either through small
beads or a chemical solution called a zeolite. These two devices
will are covered with sodium ions, so when water flows through
them, the sodium adheres to the particles of water and the calcium
or magnesium are removed.
Depending on the type of the home water softeners, either the beads
or the zeolite will need to be regenerated, as they will become
coated in the calcium or magnesium ions and be empty of the sodium
ions.
In order to regenerate the beads or zeolite, the device will need
to be removed from the filtration system and soaked in sodium ions.
This sodium ion solution is, essentially, salt water.
By eliminating hard water from the home through the use of home
water softeners, homeowners will not only reduce soap scum in the
shower and bathroom, but they will also have a better laundry experience.
Hard water can cause clothing to age more rapidly than otherwise
and lead to stiffness that would otherwise not be in the fabric.
Home water softeners generally cost a few hundred dollars, but
are relatively easy to install. They come in a variety of sizes
and models, but will generally filter between 30,000 and 50,000
gallons of water. Tanks may vary in size between 9” x 10” and
10” x 54” and can be attached to the main water source
for the home.
For softer laundry, smoother skin, cleaner pipes, and fresher water,
a simple fix for homeowners with hard water is to invest in home
water softeners.
