Treating Acidic Water - pH
Explained
The scientific definition of pH is a measure of
the degree of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution as measured
on a scale (pH scale) of 0 to 14. The midpoint of 7.0 on the
pH scale represents a “neutral” solution of neither
acidity nor alkalinity. A reading below 7.0 represents acidity,
while readings above 7.0 represent alkalinity. pH is a measure
of intensity, not of quantity. Since hydrogen is responsible
for acidity or alkalinity, the abbreviation “pH” stands
for “potential of hydrogen.”
The pH scale is logarithmic
in nature. A pH of 5.0 is 10 times more acidic than 6.0, while
a pH of 5.0 is 100 times more acidic than a pH of 7.0
pH is the
negative logarithm of the Hydrogen ion concentration. Squeezed
lemon and vinegar are sour or acidic. If we drank them we could
take something alkaline like bicarbonate of soda to neutralize
the acidity in our stomachs - in other words to raise the pH.
Now instead of sour, let’s use the term 'hydrogen ions',
and instead of alkaline let’s use the term 'hydroxyl ions'.
Vinegar has many more hydrogen ions than hydroxyl ions. Conversely,
calcium carbonate, being alkaline, possesses more hydroxyl ions
than hydrogen ions. In summary, acids produce hydrogen ions,
alkalis produce hydroxyl ions.
THE EFFECTS OF ACIDITY
Acidity,
i.e. low pH, affects both the water that goes on you as well
as the water that goes into you. We shall look at the effects
of the water that is distributed throughout your home first.
- To Your Home
Once water pH begins to drop below 6.8 a variety
of issues begin to appear as pH declines and/or as acidity and
time take their toll on you home water systems. Acidic water
causes:
- Leaching of copper and metal from pipes, water
appliances and fixtures.
- Shortened life for hot water
tanks, shower heads and faucets, dishwashers, laundry washers
and internal parts of toilets.
- Pinhole leaks in water
pipes.
- Blue/green stains in sinks, tubs and shower areas
caused by leaching and metallic oxidation of copper and metal
- Etching
of porcelain and glass in toilets, sinks, shower glass and
glassware
- To Your Body
An ideal pH within the human body will vary among
the different organs and systems. The digestive and elimination
systems of the body will generally be acidic to assist in the
breakdown of food. This includes stomach juices (pH of 1.5),
colon (pH of 3.5 to 4.3) and even the skin (pH of 4.7). The skin
is actually responsible for the elimination of up to 70% of the
toxins from the body’s 75 trillion cells.
Most of the remainder
of the body prefers an alkaline pH of 7.0 or higher. This includes
the blood (pH of 7.35 to 7.45), cell interiors (pH of 7.1), saliva
(pH of 7.1) and pancreatic juices (pH of 8.8). These items contain
or deliver much of the water and oxygen held in the body. When
these areas become acidic the body struggles to remove toxins,
maintain energy levels, move oxygen through the body and cope
with stressful situations. Acidic water is also more stressful
to maintaining healthy skin and hair.
So the water that goes
into your body needs to be in the alkaline pH area, i.e. 7.0
or higher. If the human body is constantly forced to take in
acidic water, then the overall body pH will drop below the healthy
7.0 pH level throughout most of the body. Consciously or unconsciously
in many cases people reduce water intake or quit drinking the
water all together when it is acidic. Healthy daily water consumption
equates to one ounce of water per every two pounds of body weight.
A 150 pound person should drink 75 ounces of water per day.
A
healthy body condition depends upon a high level of electromagnetic
negative charge on the surfaces of tissue cells. Acidity is the
opposite charge and dampens out these electrical fields. If tissue
pH deviates too far to the acid side, cellular metabolism will
cease and oxygen deprivation will occur. Acidity and lack of
oxygen are the ideal environmental condition for morbid microforms
to flourish. These are the primary symptoms of disease. So in
short, acute or recurrent illnesses and infections are either
the attempt by the body to mobilize mineral reserves from all
parts of the body or crisis attempts at detoxification. For example,
the body may throw off acids through the skin, producing symptoms
such as eczema, dermatitis, acne, or other skin disorders. Chronic
symptoms result when all possibilities of neutralizing or eliminating
acids have been exhausted.
TREATING ACIDIC WATER
If your household
water is acidic, then a water neutralizing system is required
to protect your home’s water pathways and appliances from
the negative effects of low pH. The benefits to the water that
goes into your body will also be corrected with proper water
neutralization. Neutralization of acidic water entails the introduction
of alkaline, organic minerals such as calcium carbonate or magnesium
oxide (in extreme cases) via a water filtration system to create
a healthy pH level. It must be noted that neutralization of your
water’s acidity will generally increase the Hardness Minerals
Level in your water approximately 1.0 to 2.0 grains per gallon
(gpg) for each ½ point increase in pH. Sediment and iron
can also be filtered with this system if these conditions are
also present.
